Can I leave a Will in the UK without employing a Solicitor?

In short, the answer is yes, you can definitely write a Will without a Solicitor. Perhaps a more important (and difficult) question to answer is:

Should I write a Will myself without employing a Solicitor (or Will Writer)?”.

The answer to this question is a less helpful “it depends”.

First of all it’s important to know exactly what you want to achieve in your Will. Then, it’s important that you know what the common terms within a Will mean and the implications of including them (or not including them) within your Will are.

For instance, it’s important you think about:

– Executor(s)
– Beneficiaries
– Trustee(s)
– Guardian(s)
– Witnesses

With time, effort and proper research (together with confidence), you may be able to write an effective Will without any Solicitor involvement, which will obviously save you money.

Alternatively, if you don’t have the time to research and gain knowledge of what should be in your Will, you could spend the money on not only an expertly written Will but also the peace of mind that comes with it.

Please remember the above information is only relevant to England and Wales. For Scotland and Ireland, it’s important you find an article specific to those countries and their laws.
