Divorce 2022: A Fresh Start with New Rules

Until April 2022, getting a Divorce could be quite complicated. This article sets out the ‘then’ and ‘now’ so you can see just how much easier the process is for anyone who begins their Divorce after April 2022.

Before April 2022, those wanting to get a divorce would need a reason for getting one.

Acceptable reasons included being separated for at least 2 years, unfaithfulness and other unreasonable behaviour.

A lot changed in April 2022. Since then, getting a divorce is much easier.

No longer is there a need for separation periods, unfaithfulness (adultery) or unreasonable behaviour.

Instead, either person now needs to simply state that there is an ‘irretrievable breakdown of the marriage’. In other words, the marriage is at an end.

Either person or both jointly can start a divorce following the law changes made in April 2022.
